November's Birthstones A Little Bit of Sunshine, A Little Bit of Blue

First I am going to talk about the traditional November birthstones, which are Topaz and Citrine, then I am going to talk about the less traditional one for November and December - which is the same stone -  BLUE Topaz.

Topaz is a silicate mineral derived from the Sanskrit word meaning "FIRE" or "HEAT", and when we think about this stone most of us think about the color Yellow.

It tis considered The "Merchant's Stone": Long viewed as a talisman for wealth, success, and business prosperity. Ancient Chinese emperors and merchants wore it to invite fortune.

Citrine and Topaz both yellow, smokey brown and light orange in color are the official birthstones for November, famous for their warm, golden colors, and association with energy and abundance.

In case you don't love the color Yellow or Brown you might be interested to know Topaz can also be BLUE.

How does a traditionally Yellow / Brownstone turn BLUE? Most people don’t know it but it is treated with Heat. The stone heated (annealed) to stable temperatures, which burns off the muddy yellow and brown undertones and stabilizes the brilliant, permanent blue. Actually a little insider jewelry scoop - almost all stones are treated in one way or another to enhance their natural color as well as improve clarity and to stabilize them. It is not a bad thing - it actually (generally) is good to enhance natural tones and make the stones stronger.

A little piece of advice if someone tells you a stone is "natural" and it looks incredibly bright or has no inclusions - buyer beware!
